Artist Statement
Often misunderstood in text. The work itself tells the story so simply. Rulers, measuring tapes, paper patterns, or complicated arithmetic rejected. These methods have traveled across the. world. The Atlantic Ocean also existed in this land before the European invasion. Shortcuts and simplicity because it's in my DNA. Sewing, quilting, weaving organic stories that are whispered in daydreams. This work is guided by my ancestors. Sustainability is an ancient way of life, use ALL fibers, ALL fabric scraps, and found materials because nothing can be wasted.
Art is a privilege, not even time do we have to spare.

Hekima Hapa is the founder of the nonprofit Black Girls Sew, a nonprofit that offers classes, workshops, and a summer camp to teach children and adults how to participate sustainably. The mission of Black Girl’s Sew Inc. is to offer the tools needed to create a more fashionable future and our organization focuses on teaching fundamental life skills such as creativity and resourcefulness through the design process.

Black Girls Sew, is a groundbreaking book authored by Hekima Hapa and Lesley Ware, and published by Abrams. The book is the first of its kind, aimed at supporting the empowerment and identity
cultivation of Black girls. The Brooklyn-based nonprofit Black Girls leads the initiative Sew, which emphasizes teaching young girls to take pride in their clothing and provides a safe space for creativity without misrepresentation of their culture. The book imparts basic sewing skills and design principles, encouraging readers to explore their creativity, take risks, and develop unique looks. With a focus on inclusivity and fostering a sense of ownership, Black Girls Sew equips young fashion enthusiasts with tools, knowledge, and patterns to sew various items.
